The tide rolls out, the tide rolls in
Without a thought for the ways of men

Setsuko Sui

Name: Setsuko Sui
Age: Adult
Race: Au Ra | Raen
Occupation: Pearl Merchant, Gleaner
Setsuko's life has taken, like the ocean currents surrounding her birthplace, a kind of drifting way, carrying her from her origins through several places; not unlike a piece of flotsam carried by the tide. The child of pearl divers from Sui-no-Sato, she began learning her parents' trade in adolescence, often accompanying on excursions while being watchful of sharks and other dangers. They traded with their undersea neighbors, the Kojin of the Blue, for supplies from the surface. When danger came for her, though, it came not as sharks or the people on the surface she'd heard stories about, but something stranger - a shimmering ocean current that seemed to come out of nowhere, immediately separating her and her parents.Being exposed to the spectral current left her touched by it - more importantly, it left her lost and disoriented, adrift far away from the enclosure of home. Swimming without a sense of direction. When it dissipated, she'd washed up ashore in a different part of the Ruby Sea entirely, on the sacred island of Onokoro. She'd heard of the fearsome pirates who patrolled the surface waters, of course - every child in Sui-no-Sato is told rumors, but she found the Confederacy pirates warm enough. They helped her reorient - put her to work as they did their younger members, beachcombing for coral and other things to trade. She had a real knack for it - finding treasures in the sand and underwater, as well as combing through plunder and identifying the richest items as if by intuition alone. Even as she stared out at the ocean and dreamed of returning to her isolated home under the waves, she began to adapt to life on the surface. The Confederates had a mind to eventually set her to helping keep the treasury, and she may have thrived there if a visitor to Onokoro hadn't happened to meet her instead. A traveling scholar from Sharlayan, in the area on unspoken purpose, he offered her instead an opportunity to hone her talents to their best and broadest use.

Sui-no-Sato
The Raen exiles from the underwater city are not so rare on the surface. Fellow expatriates may recall the tale of a young girl from a family of pearl divers who went missing among the oyster beds some years ago.
With the current Ruby Princess making strides to open the underwater nation to outside trade and contact, Setsuko is certainly interested in whatever news comes from beneath the waves, particular in interest of her own family. The Confederacy
Likewise - the pirates who keep the Ruby Tithe have numbered among them a Raen woman who drifted into their number like a piece of driftwood some time ago.
She wasn't quite cut out for the rougher aspects of the life, but maintains good relationships and contacts for when she needs to pass through the area. The Spiral Shell of Sharlayan
Someone with a talent for finding things is likely to attract the attention of those who seek things. Offered an opportunity to join the nation's Gleaner Guildship, Setsuko specializes in undersea specimens, from rare fish to pearls and coral, and is often called on to help navigate passage through the Ruby Price due to her local contacts.
